Here at Michael Rose Visual Art we are proud to be able to provide Body Piercing. We have many years experience and welcome any questions that you may have. We are registered with Hertsmere Borough Council Health Authority and our premises are inspected regularly. Our policy is that all jewellery used must be free of nicks, scratches, burrs and polishing compounds, jewellery and equipment used for piercing is sterilized at all times. A new needle (sealed packet) is used every time and disposed of after use. We use the most Comprehensive range of Body jewellery to date, we use medical grade titanium Ti 6AL 4V. Here at Michael Rose Visual Art we will not pierce anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs. We require our piercing customers to be of a minimum age of 13 & provide I.D, If you are under the age of 16 you will need to be accompanied by a parent who can also provide photographic I.D. Some piercings have a minimum age of 18 and will also require I.D, please contact studio for details about this. I.D. will be required if you appear to be under age, if in doubt JUST BRING I.D.

Anaesthetic (numbing) can be used during certain procedures if requested.

Microdermal implants (also known as surface or dermal anchors) are the latest thing to hit the piercing scene. They can be placed everywhere a surface piercing can, and many places they can’t! Although they look similar to a surface piercing, they are different from conventional piercings in that they are composed of two components: an anchor, which is implanted underneath the skin, with a step protruding (or flush with) the surface of the surrounding skin, and the interchangeable jewellery, which is screwed into the threaded hole in the step of the anchor. You can get plain disks or jems. Fitting them is very similar to getting a surface piercing, with very little trauma to the skin. Although considered a permanent piercing, we can remove them safely. It only leaves a very small mark, much less, than a standard piercing that has migrated. Skin divers/Rivets are very similar to dermal anchors except they are smaller and they are not interchangeable like the anchors. They are fitted in the same way but the anchor is not considered permanent. They look like a small disk on the skin. As we are all individuals and can react to anything at any time no matter how much care you take, allergic reactions are always possible, Just remember to be patient listen to the advice given to you.

Please contact Rhiana at the studio for an appointment or for more details.

How to look after your new Piercing!

Cleaning Instructions:

New Body Piercings need to be cleaned once or twice daily, every day, for the entire initial healing time. Most people clean morning and night, in the shower. Do not clean more often as this can irritate your piercing, possibly delaying the healing time. Optimal frequency will depend on your skin sensitivity, activity level and environment. If you can only clean your piercing once a day, I suggest you do so at the end of your day rather than the beginning.

1: Always wash hands thoroughly before cleaning with antibacterial soap and hot water. If you wish, you may use disposable gloves. Never touch your healing piercing with dirty hands, this is vital to avoid infections.

2: Prepare the area for the cleaning by rinsing or soaking with warm water, be sure to remove any stubborn crust using a cotton ear bud and warm water, never use your fingers.

3: Apply a small amount of cleaning solution to the area using a cotton ear bud ( a different one than in step 2) cleanse the area and jewellery, gently move the jewellery back and forth a few times to work the solution in to the inside.

4: Allow the solution to cleanse there for a minute, then rinse the area thoroughly if possible under a shower so it is running water, while you are doing this move the jewellery back and forth as in number 3 to clean out the solution.

5: Gently pat dry with disposable tissue, as towels and clothes can harbour bacteria.

You need to be patient with your piercing; adding creams and using antibacterial sprays such as savlon to try to speed up the healing process are more likely to delay it. Each body is unique and healing time can vary considerably. If your piercing is tender or secreting you should continue the aftercare regimen even if it is past the stated average healing time

Aftercare Solution

I would recommend our aftercare solution which is used twice daily; this will accelerate healing and increase your comfort. You can buy in-store or in our merchandise page. Wash hands first, apply a small amount around the area using a clean cotton bud each time and dry thoroughly. Do not remove the jewellery. Continue until fully healed.

NOTE: I would not advise using a stronger solution as you can in-flame the piercing causing discomfort

Reason behind using our aftercare solution: it will help stimulate air and blood circulation with facilitates healing. I would advise you to use solution before you do anything active, as it will prevent crust from getting inside the piercing as you move around.

What is Normal:

Bleeding, bruising, discolouration and or swelling are not uncommon so these symptoms are not an indication to any complications. If your piercing is on the neck upwards, try sleeping with your head above your heart (stack up some pillows) to limit over night swelling. Studies have show ibuprofen can help minimize swelling.

Some tenderness or discomfort in the area of the piercing is not unusual. You may feel stinging, burning, aching or other unpleasant sensations on and off for several days or longer. During healing, it may be itching.

Secretion of fluid that contains blood plasma, lymph and dead cells is perfectly normal. It is liquid, whitish-yellow in colour and forms a crust on the jewellery at the openings of the piercing. This is not pus, but indicates a healed piercing.

Piercings may have a tendency to have series of up and downs during healing, by seeming healed and the regressing. Try to be patient; do keep cleaning during the healing time even if the piercing seems healed sooner.

Hints for particular areas:

Navel: Avoid tight clinching clothing, belts, jeans and waistbands during healing.
I would not advise re dressing daily, only time to re dress is if you are doing physical activity where your piercing may get caught or knocked if not covered.

Ear/ear cartilage/facial: Shield piercings away from hair sprays and avoid getting lotions, make up and any other foreign bodies in to your piercing. Use clean pillowcases for hygiene reason and change regularly.

Nipple: If your pets sleep on your bed I would advise wearing a light cotton top whilst in bed to stop hairs getting in to the piercing. Be careful when putting on and off clothes.

Genital: Sexual activity is not prohibited but it must be hygienic though. Listen to your body if it is sore, it means you need to ease up or stop for the time being. Use condoms (without nonoxynol 9) and dental dams for all sexual contact to prevent sharing bodily fluids. I suggest this even if you are in a monogamous relationship. It is mandatory for your health and safety during you healing time.

What to do:

• Do not change the jewellery before advised, taking the piercing jewellery in and out too soon can lead to infection

• If you like your piercing leave it in at all times, even healed piercings’ that have been in for years can shrink and close. The time of this happening varies from person to person.

• If you need to temporally change your jewellery for medical/work purposes, please contact me at the studio. A PTFE bar can be put in.

• Make sure your bedding is clean and changed regularly especially if pets get in to your bed.

• Diet and general life style can effect your healing, if you get enough sleep eat a nutritious diet avoid stress, drugs and alcohol you will make it easier for your piercing to heal.

If at any time, you are worried about your new piercing, please get in contact with me at the studio. If you call me, there is only so much I can do over the phone ideally if you are worried come in to the studio so I can take a lot at your piercing and make sure everything is ok or advise you if it is not.

What not to do:

• Do not use anything stronger than the recommended solution as it may be too strong for your piercing and cause harm to it.

• Do not apply any ointments unless advised to do so applying them when not necessary can delay healing and cause problems.

• Do not over clean your piercing as this can also delay healing.

• Avoid oral contact, rough play and contact with other’s bodily fluids on or near your piercing during healing

• Try to avoid sleeping on a new piercing if possible as this can irritate it and make it sore.

• Do not hang any charms or items from your jewellery until it has properly healed.

• Stay clear of swimming pools, Jacuzzis etc as the water in there will more than likely be dirty and contaminate your piercing if you do go in these conditions make sure you clean your piercing when you come out.

These guidelines are based on a combination of vast professional experience, common sense, research and extensive clinical practice. This is not to be considered substitute for medical advice from a doctor. Be aware, however, that many doctors have no specific training or experience regarding piercings and may not be educated on how is best to assist you.
